Where's Wally?

'An Obsessive Beginning'
Collage and Drawing on Passport Photos.
165cm X 390cm (Piece as a whole)

Detailed photographs of my work for my final Westminster show.

From comparing the abstract collages and the passport photo collages, I was reminded of Lygia Pape’s work ‘Livro do tempo’ (Book of Time). I was impressed by the large mass of the work against size.
Looking around the studio, I saw that a majority of the students were making large pieces of work, considering the size of the P3 space we were to display our work. I wanted my work to stand out and compliment the work around me and working on that same large scale (with my abstract collages) would not add presence to my work, but would in fact compete against other large works in a negative way.
I therefore decided to show these passport collages that I have been working on.

The Title of the work, 'An Obsessive Beginning' refers to my intention to carry on with this work.
Although the works already seem impressive with the amount of collage displayed here, I think the work would be more impressive with an even bigger mass. I therefore intend to carry on with these collages and display them all again in the future with this in mind, filling a larger space or even filling a gallery.

Technique and Detail

A selection of collages from the show to display the detail that I am trying to achieve in each collage and the variety of techniques I am using in the different collages.
In total there are 304 finished passport photos in which 300 are hung.

More Abstract Collage

'A Cut in the Right Direction'
Collage on A1 Foam Board

Again playing around with different shapes, colours and overall composition.
Wanting to paint from these collages at some point, keeping the painting as clean and crisp as the collage.

'Solid Water'
Collage on A1 Foam Board

From playing around with collage and drawing in a more conventional way, I now want to create abstract drawings from the selected images, instead of creating abstract images that are still quite recogniseable.

I also wanted to achieve a more delicate outcome that is still quite modern and clean.

'Cutting the Colour'

Collage on Foam Board

I really like this longer shape, rather than the A1 Foam board piece.
It gives the piece a much nicer composition.

From feedback given to me from my mid-term assessments I am also trying to play around with the sizes of my work.
For example, these drawings I see getting much larger and being inspiration for a huge painting.
I am also working on some tiny collages on passport photos to completely contrast to this. Considering the ways in which an artwork can be hugely domineering or incredibly intimate.

... and from a pile of magazines

Small collage experiments for larger collages.

Kandinsky-esc collages.
Looking for a modern, crisp, graphical outcome.

Panic! ... about the dissertation

Dissertation over... !!

And on with the part everybody loves... the art work.

'Panic! 2'
Acrylic Paint on Canvas

Because of the restrictions on the sizes of the ppsheet I have been using, I am starting to explore other materials and other sizes. Starting with the obvious (canvas) to view my work on a larger scale.

the incredibly small tennis racket...

Birthday card for a Tennis fan.
She would have perhaps preferred Nadal on the front, however... I had 1 hour to make it so this is the best I could come up with on such short notice...
which may explain the small tennis racket lol!
